In August 2023, the Christus Trinity Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler, Texas, announced the unveiling of the Hope Monument. Funded by retired OB/GYN physician Dr. Sutliff and his wife, Lydia, the monument serves as a memorial to children who have lost their lives as a result of miscarriages, traumatic deliveries, and accidents. As Dr. Sutliff described it, losing a child within a clinical context was “the saddest thing . . . encountered in otherwise usually happy situations.” Designed to facilitate healing and self-reflection, Hope Monuments have already been installed at about 30 locations nationwide. Dr. Sutliff successfully contacted the sculptor directly to have one made for the East Texas community.
