Automation Could Be a Lifeline for a Struggling Healthcare Industry

Paul Generale serves as executive vice president at Christus Health, a Catholic non-profit that provides health services internationally with more than 60 hospitals and 175 clinics. The global healthcare industry where Paul Generale works is changing, and some experts are calling for more automation.

Employee sickness within the healthcare industry, and therefore employee absenteeism, has increased dramatically since 2020, partly due to COVID-19 - the importance of quarantine when the disease spreads to healthcare workers makes absenteeism necessary no matter how inconvenient it is. Absenteeism among healthcare workers has dramatically increased, leading to a knock-on effect on patients waiting for treatment or to be discharged from hospitals.

For this reason, the industry is in a position to consider automation to reinforce its organizational efficiency. Robotic Process Automation (RPA) can help create breathing room for healthcare staff by completing mundane and routine tasks in the background while professionals work on providing specialized care for patients. These tasks can include automated patient billing, patient communication via chatbots, data analysis, and even augmented reality that uses 3D imaging to aid diagnosis or surgery. Less labor required means that employee absenteeism doesn’t sting as much, and costs can be cut without the risk of quality of care decreasing.

CHRISTUS Health - Progress through Integration and Service Delivery

Paul Generale is the executive vice president at CHRISTUS Health, an international Catholic non-profit health system with over 60 hospitals and 400 ambulatory centers. The health system has locations in the United States (Louisiana, Texas, and New Mexico) and three Latin American countries. Paul Generale works from the system’s Dallas, Texas location. He became executive vice president in 2015 to steer enterprise wide strategy.

Since 2013 CHRISTUS has been on a path of integration, moving from a holding company with disparate assets to an integrated one with centralized functions. As part of the move, CHRISTUS standardized financial and analytics operations across its services, moved its senior team from three corporate offices to one, and developed a culture that emphasized agile, quality service in the communities it had a presence in.

While integrating, CHRITUS doubled down on the services it offered at local levels, incorporating essential services where they were missing. For example, where it lacked ambulatory surgery services, it provided them and where it did not have integrated physician networks, it built them out. So rather than growing by acquiring hospitals and clinics, CHRISTUS looked inward and delivered more value to community residents, meeting more of their healthcare needs. As a result of these efforts, the health system has experienced tremendous growth since 2013, more than doubling its assets from $4 billion to $8.5 billion.

How to Develop a Beginner’s Wine Preferences

12/1/2021

Paul Generale is the executive vice president at Christus Health in Dallas, Texas, with over five years in the role. Among his variety of pass times, Paul Generale is interested in wine.

To find a wine you like, you control multiple factors while tasting and use your judgment. Buy three bottles of red and three of white from a local retailer. If you recognize any brands, buy wines from those brands. Though you can ask the store owner to help you pick your bottles, they might confuse you by asking what wine you like. Someone else describing the qualities of wine for you defeats the purpose of developing your palette yourself.

Red and white wine require slightly different preparations because red wine’s ideal serving temperature is 65 degrees Fahrenheit, while white wine is 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Refrigerate them both, but let red wine sit out for about an hour before pouring and for 10 minutes between being poured and drinking it. In contrast, remove white wine from the fridge 10 minutes before pouring.

Though there are about 25 wine glass types, and a white wine glass will suffice for a beginner, any glass where the rim is narrower than the body, the rest of the glass, is ideal because it will direct the scent of the wine toward you more effectively. When drinking the wine, smell it first, and write down what you smell. After taking your first small sip, write down as many flavors and textures, how the wine feels in your mouth as you can think of. Drink the rest of the wine in small sips to build on your initial impressions.

The president and CEO of AZA, Dan Ashe, praised the Baylor Bear Habitat staff for their strong preparation for the accreditation hearing, stating that they “did their homework and passed with flying colors.”

The Baylor Bear Habitat is home to Judge Joy and Judge Lady, two American black bears and biological sisters. Prior to accreditation, the AZA accreditation visiting committee visited the bears’ home and noted the quality of the facility, veterinary care, and animal welfare. Dedicated to education and conservation, the Baylor Bear Habitat aims to educate the public and participate in conservation programs that have a direct impact on animals in the wild.

Having worked across Texas in different roles, including in Irving and Dallas, Paul Generale has served as Christus Health’s executive vice president since 2015. At the organization, Paul Generale has seen its centers receiving several reclassifications, such as with the Good Shepherd Medical Center - Longview’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

The Texas Department of State Health Services officially re-classified the unit as a Level III NICU, which recognizes the center’s commitment to best practices and maintaining high standards. Dr. Christopher Ihionkhan, the NICU’s medical director, noted that he was proud of the services he and his colleagues provide.

Speaking about its quality of care, he added that the Good Shepherd Medical Center was able to offer a level of care often only seen in large metropolitan areas. The center’s services include a neonatal nurse practitioner that’s available in-house to patients 24/7 and a specialized NICU Transport Team.

The classification system was introduced by the Texas legislature in 2015, and mandates minimum safety and quality requirements for any medical centers that offer child care or delivery services.

Possessing decades of experience in healthcare management, Paul Generale serves as executive vice president and chief strategy and network officer for CHRISTUS Health in Dallas. Paul Generale is actively involved with several professional networks to continue providing the best service possible to patients. One of these networks is the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA).

This year, HFMA published best practices for the fair resolution of patient medical bills in collaboration with the Association for Credit and Collection Professionals. The joint report highlights the importance of patient education and ensuring these individuals understand the bill, as well as the account resolution process. Education makes the process feel transparent and prevents patients from receiving an unexpected bill. Transparency also requires that hospitals cover financial assistance policies and connect patients to a full range of coverage and payment options.

The best practices report provides a full outline of the accounts receivable resolution process, from education before services are rendered to post-discharge policies. In addition, the document offers suggestions on handling special circumstances, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. More information about the best practice suggestions are available at HFMA.org.

A graduate of the University of Houston, Paul Generale serves as executive vice president at Dallas-based CHRISTUS Health. In this capacity, he oversees acquisitions, services, and risk finance. Paul Generale also plays a leadership role in administering post-acute-care and ambulatory services for the system.

CHRISTUS recently joined several nearby hospitals to provide hurricane relief along the Gulf Coast. Hurricane Laura hit the area in August 2020 and caused significant damage in coastal Louisiana.

Lake Charles Memorial Hospital, directly hit by the hurricane, suffered damage, and had to have babies moved from its neonatal intensive care unit to other nearby hospitals. Our Lady of Lourdes Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Lafayette took in 10 babies from the unit.

CHRISTUS Ochsner Lake Area Hospital in Lake Charles also had to move four infants from the NICU to the system’s St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont, Texas. Though Ochsner Lake Area remained open during the storm, it experienced extensive wind and roof damage that required the transfer of 24 patients and the subsequent closure of the facility.

Meanwhile, Ochsner St. Patrick, also in Lake Charles, suffered substantial wind damage. However, it remained open and was kept running thanks to additional water-processing equipment and generators that were brought to the facility. CHRISTUS St. Elizabeth Hospital also sent physicians and nurses to Ochsner St. Patrick to provide the employees there with some relief. St. Elizabeth also took four infants from the NICU at Ochsner Lake Area facility.
